What is CBD? & What does CBD stand for?

The full form of CBD is Cannabidiol, it is a naturally occurring compound that is found in the cannabis plant. In recent years there has been an increase in the demand for Cannabis in India due to its various therapeutic and medicinal benefits. The cannabis plant contains over hundred different types of cannabinoids out of which the most prominent are CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Although both have various therapeutic benefits, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive and hence does not cause a high in a person.

There is an increasing popularity curve for Cannabidiol (CBD) oil in India due to the growing awareness about its benefits.

What is CBD used for?

Scientific research shows a strong potential for CBD to be used in the treatment and management of symptoms in stress, anxiety, insomnia, depression, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, arthritis etc. Further research is needed as CBD can completely modify the alternative medical landscape and help in a plethora of chronic and acute illness apart from improving general well-being.

How does the CBD function?

CBD interacts with the human body with the help of the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates and balances the physiological functioning in the body like mood, energy, appetite, pain perception, immune response, blood pressure, sleep, inflammation etc. The main work of the endocannabinoid system is to maintain the balance between different systems of the body so that they remain functional irrespective of the external conditions and return the internal state to homeostasis.

There are 3 main parts of the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

  1. Endocannabinoids – Endocannabinoids or endogenous cannabinoids are molecules similar to cannabinoids found in cannabis plants but are produced in our own body. We have two main endocannabinoids namely Anandamide (derived from Sanskrit word ‘Ananda’ which means joy and bliss) and 2-arachidonoylglyerol (2-AG)
  2. Endocannabinoid receptors – Endocannabinoids go and bind to endocannabinoid receptors to signal the ECS of a specific action to perform. There are two main types of cannabinoid receptors found in our body. CB1 receptors are mainly found in the central nervous system and CB2 receptors are mostly found in peripheral nervous system and immune cells.
  3. Metabolic enzymes – These enzymes are responsible for breaking down the cannabinoids once their work has been done. FAAH and MAGL are the two main enzymes that break down Anandamide and 2-AG respectively.

Though CBD doesn’t attach itself to CB1 and CB2 receptors like THC, it is believed to work by preventing the breakdown of endocannabinoids, thereby assisting the ECS to maintain a homeostasis and improve the various bodily functions.

Endocannabinoid System: What Is It and What Role Does Cannabis Play?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a cell signaling system in the human body responsible for regulating several functions and processes.
